Sobans are traditional Korean pieces of furniture designed for floor-based living, representing Korea’s food culture. However, as modern lifestyles have shifted from floor-seating to chair-seating, we’ve seen a change in how people live. In response to this shift, we aimed to design a soban that retains the beauty and functionality of traditional sobans while harmonizing with modern furniture.
We drew inspiration from the polygonal forms found in traditional patterns. The legs of the soban incorporate polygonal shapes to achieve a clean and simple aesthetic. The ‘Gyogak’ design, named after the term for a bridge pier, features two legs and one tabletop, evoking the structure of a bridge. The separate tray(tabletop) can be easily removed and carried, making it ideal for gatherings where people sit around it to enjoy light snacks and tea.
